MUN Delegates Shine at KnightMUN

MUN Officers
Canterbury's Model United Nations (MUN) team traveled to Orlando to participate in the KnightMUN conference at the University of Central Florida from November 17-19, 2023. 
Below is a detailed event brief on the outcome of each delegate's performance.

Michaela F. (‘24) represented Isabella Hernandez in the Florida Everglades Advisory Committee. As Chief Park Ranger, Michaela worked with her fellow delegates to clean a devastating oil spill in the Everglades and combat a new disease outbreak within South Florida. In public and private directives, Michaela worked to increase and incentivize tourism in the Everglades, notably creating educational opportunities, devising an Everglades mascot, and innovating safe ways to travel amidst the mysterious disease outbreak. Michaela received the Best Delegate award for her efforts. Congratulations, Michaela! 
 
Alexa G. (‘24) represented Marcellus in The Renovatii Imperium Committee. Several of her directives regarding military troops' movements and training were passed, and she successfully led the Roman Army to take over the Vandal land. She received the “Outstanding Delegate” award for her efforts. Great job, Alexa!
 
Grady L. (‘24) represented Dain II Ironfoot in The Council of Elrond Committee. Grady created a brewery called Taco Bell and made a highly addictive drink called Baja Blast. He spiked the drink with a mind-control potion and built an army of agents. Grady was a large part of several directives, including one that destroyed the Ring (the main point of the committee). Grady received an Outstanding Delegate for his efforts. Fantastic job, Grady! 
 
Laith A. (‘25) Laith represented Brent Woodford and Alan Bergman in the Disney World Board of Directors. In this committee, Laith, in the front room, pushed for a new era for the Theme Park and entertainment within the company. As the owner of Taco Bell and KFC, he put his restaurants in all Disney Parks around the world. He used these restaurants as an outlet for pushing his cartel that sold “pixie dust" across international waters. He finished the committee as CEO of Disney and Universal after blackmailing their respective CEOs through his cartel empire. Laith received the Outstanding Delegate Award for his efforts. Congratulations, Laith! 
 
Mehereen C. (‘25) and Kyle F. (‘25) represented Canada in the DISEC Committee. During the duration of the committee, Mehereen and Kyle engaged in robust discussions on pressing global issues, including cyber terrorism, AI regulation, and cybercrime. Delegates delved into comprehensive discussion, exploring the nuanced challenges posed by these threats. The committee crafted the ICE-PESO resolution, signaling a united front addressing these issues. The resolution reflects a commitment to effective international cooperation and outlines concrete measures to mitigate the impact of cyber threats. Overall, the committee’s dedication and collaborative efforts resulted in the successful passage of the resolution, marking a significant step toward a more secure and regulated cyberspace. Kyle and Mehereen received a Verbal Commendation for their work. Great job, Mehereen and Kyle!
 
Alexander E. (‘25) represented Peter the Patrician in the Renovatio Imperii, The Sacrum Consistorium of Emperor Justinian, 532 CE Committee. During the committee, Alexander recommended a council of government officials to hear citizens' opinions during the rebuilding of Constantinople. To secure funds for the empire, he then managed a mine near Constantinople as well as military control over the mine. The mine served a double purpose, producing large amounts of silver and copper to fight the Justinian plague. During the plague, Alexander multitasked and managed to single-handedly conquer Rome from the Ostragroths with a small fleet of soldiers. Alexander received a Verbal Commendation for his efforts. Congratulations, Alexander! 
 
Anayah C. (‘27) represented Hungary in the UNHCR Committee concerning climate refugees. Anayah was a sponsor, writer, and speaker on the resolution paper (RAP) and helped form and add members to the bloc. The resolution paper was ultimately passed in committee. 
 
Andrea M. (‘25) represented Croatia in the UNICEF Committee, which addressed food and water insecurity. Andrea wrote several clauses throughout the committee, participated as a sponsor, and passed amendments. Her position paper played a significant role in the committee and nearly passed unanimously. 
 
Azriela C. (‘27)  represented Saudi Arabia in the UNICEF Committee addressing food and water security for youth. She was a major sponsor of the D.I.T.C.H. resolution paper. As Saudi Arabia, she provided funding and education for youth. Regarding education, Azriela continuously pushed to utilize her country's strengths (education) to help children. She proposed that schools provide education on proper dieting, the growth of crops, and the importance of water conservation. After presenting D.I.T.C.H. to other countries, the resolution paper was passed. 
 
Bo H (‘24) represented Grandmaster Poppo Von Osterna of the Teutonic Order in The Great Interregnum Committee. The committee covered a period in the mid to late 1200s when there wasn’t a clear holy Roman emperor, and the central authority began to fall apart. Crisis updates included crusades, wars against France and Italy, and the instability caused by the actions in the committee. Bo’s arc built up his armies to invade Brandenburg and declare the Kingdom of Prussia. 
 
Imoni A. (‘27) and Addison B. (‘27) represented Kazakhstan in the dual delegate DISEC Committee. Addison frequently presented during moderated caucuses on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Additionally, she was part of both committee’s authors' panels. Imoni served as a writer and presenter on the initial PESO paper. Addison and Imoni sponsored the final merged ICE-PESO resolution paper and passed the SPICEE-CSGO resolution.  
 
Jimmy G. (‘24) represented Willy in the Stardew Valley committee. He was able to get many directives passed. Jimmy became assistant mayor and, in the end, created a giant chicken. Jimmy is excited to continue his MUN journey at the next conference. 
 
Kaden K. (‘26) represented Bilbo Baggins in The Council of Elrond Committee. Kaden wrote and passed directives to decide the fate of Middle Earth. During the committee, the ring was destroyed, saving Middle Earth. Kaden’s arc created a global empire, creating a hobbit cartel in which laxatives were used and blamed on Taco Bell. Ultimately, this turned all the dwarves against their king, resulting in his death. 
 
Leena A. (‘27) represented Benin in the OCHR committee, which highlighted two topics:  journalist safety in active conflict zones and journalist safety in the digital age. Leena argued why journalist safety in active conflict zones was essential for debate, primarily focusing on its applicability to the current conflict in the Middle East. She proposed the SAFEGUARD solution, later shortened to SAFE (Safety, Awareness, Funding, Education). Leena formed a bloc with Chile, India, Cameroon, Kazakhstan, and additional countries. She successfully aided in passing the final resolution paper. 
 
Niki P. (‘27) represented Switzerland in the UNHCR Committee concerning climate refugees. She assisted in writing the resolution paper with her bloc, which was eventually passed. 
 
Phoebe M. (‘26) represented the Russian Federation in the IAEA committee. She was a part of the bloc that wrote and passed the A.I.M. resolution. (She was a signatory on the paper.) The IAEA passed one other resolution and failed a third one. 
 
Preston F. (‘25) represented Llewelyn Thompson in the One Step to Armageddon Committee. The committee was set during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Crisis updates within the committee included a communist uprising in Seattle and a pro-military uprising in New York, Tallahassee, and Miami. Preston created an arc that formed a coup in the United States, allowing for a rise in government issues. 
 
Rachell S. (‘25) represented Alexa Quadrani, senior vice president of investor relations, on the Disney Board of Directors committee. In committee, she made millions investing shares in a Spider-Man movie. Rachell sabotaged other delegates and purchased 35 percent of Spotify. She became secretary of the Florida Government. Rachell resurrected THE Walt Disney and ultimately became Disney and Universal’s CEO.  
 
Tegan F. (‘26) represented Ping Fi in the Ticketmaster: This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things Committee. Teagan began the committee with the goal of keeping tickets affordable and aided in capping dynamic prices while giving the artist a chance to remove them altogether. Tegan was a significant part of the Anti-Pookie Nation (a major monopoly), attempting to investigate and dissolve them. Teagan ultimately succeeded in her attempts. Additionally, she arrested a supporter of the Pookie Nation utilizing evidence including a. The chairs were destroyed while an Anti-Pookie directive was being passed, and b. He was a Kanye West Fan. The supporter was sent to trial and ultimately found guilty. 
 
Zoe M. (‘26)  represented Thailand in the SOCHUM, a committee focused on ending child labor and juvenile military involvement. Zoe proposed LIGHT (Leveraging Innovation for Global Human Transformation). This solution was well-liked by other countries and became the name of the resolution in the bloc with Haiti, India, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and more. Zoe was on the author's panel, and the paper was the only one passed, with all delegates unanimously voting yes.
