Canterbury Wins FACA Coach + Player of the Year Awards
The Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) released its winter sports Player and Coach of the Year winners for each classification this week, with Canterbury sweeping the honors in three sports!
The Cougar boys and girls soccer teams, as well as girls basketball team swept the Coach and Player of the Year awards.
Dusty D. '25 and head coach Jared Rust brought it home in the 2A Boys Soccer division. Casey O. '26 and head coach Camary Williams won the honors in the 3A Girls Basketball classification, and Kali Y. '26 and head coach Paolo Acosta took home the honors in the 2A Girls Soccer classification.
Girls basketball coach Camary Williams led one of the most dramatic turnarounds in her first year as head coach. She led the Cougars to a district runner-up title after the team finished in fifth place a year ago. As a team, the Cougars led the district in almost every statistical category this season (scoring, blocks, steals, assists, and double doubles), and Casey O. '26 was a key contributor to this year's success.
The newcomer averaged a district leading 20.6 points per game this season, scoring 474 total points. As a freshman at Fort Myers High School she averaged just 5.4 points per game and scored 114 total points.
"Casey has been a tremendous asset to our team this year," said Williams. "She has a very bright future ahead of her and I am excited to see what is in store for her. Her work ethic is unmatched. I have to make her take a break because she eats, sleeps and breathes basketball!"
Dusty was a dual threat for the Cougar boys soccer team on offense and defense this season, helping lead the Cougars to its sixth consecutive district championship. The junior played 1,600 of 1,680 possible minutes this season and was a defensive wall most teams were unable to penetrate.
"While being a great defender, Dusty is able to win the ball off the other team and then start our attack with a great dribble or precision pass," remarked 2A FACA Coach of the Year Jared Rust. "Dusty is incredibly consistent for our team and is very deserving of the award."
On the girls side of the ball, sophomore captain Kali Y. '26 was instrumental in bringing the district title back to the girls soccer program this year. Kali finished with nine goals and 15 assists on the season, tied for most assists in the 2A classification.
"It is incredible to think how she is just a sophomore," said 2A Coach of the Year Paolo Acosta. "She led by example on and off the field for us this season and is so deserving of this honor."
