Canterbury Hosts CASMUNC XV, Bringing Schools Together for a Day of Diplomacy and Debate

On Saturday, January 11, the Canterbury Model United Nations team proudly hosted CASMUNC XV, our annual Model UN conference. We welcomed delegates from several schools, including Cypress Lake High School, Fort Myers High School, Bishop Verot Catholic High School, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, and Lely High School. In addition, a representative from the Naples Council on World Affairs observed the committees. The day was filled with intense debate, diplomacy, and camaraderie. We are incredibly proud of all our delegates for their dedication and enthusiasm.
A heartfelt thank you to our advisor, Dr. Young, as well as our chaperones — Dr. Barnett, Ms. Dunavant, Ms. French, and Mr. Wilkie—and our security team, led by Mr. Lee, for making this event possible!

General Assembly World Health Organization Summary:

In the World Health Organization committee, chaired by Olivia T. ’25, and Helina L. ’25, Azriela C. ’27, Teagan F. FSW Collegiate ’26, delegates represented different countries as they discussed and came up with solutions to the topic of mitigating high levels of exposure to carcinogenic agents. Some of the solutions discussed include expanding accessibility to healthcare and medical professionals, increasing funding of medical research in developing countries, having public awareness campaigns for the dangers of carcinogenic products, and implementing safety measures in workplaces that may expose people to hazardous conditions. Each of the two blocs successfully wrote and passed comprehensive resolution papers titled The Awareness, Industrial Regulation, and Medical Training (A.I.M.) plan, and the Healthy Opportunities Possessed Equally (H.O.P.E.) plan. After a committee update where all the chairs were dramatically affected by the rampant disease called Agent X, the countries had to swiftly work together to find solutions and save the chairs which included establishing vaccine clinics, researching patients to prevent further spread and mutations, and focusing on nuclear cleanup operations from radiation left after the explosion. Delegates were able to collaborate effectively, practice their public speaking skills, and converse about real-world issues. Great job to all those who competed!

Global Conflagration Crisis Summary:
In the Global Conflagration Crisis, chaired by Preston F. ’25, Jacques M. ’26, and Lauren T. ’26, delegates were thrust into the heart of World War II, facing the immense challenge of uniting against the Axis powers. As tensions ran high and the fate of the world hung in the balance, delegates had to set aside their national interests, form strategic alliances, and leverage diplomacy, military tactics, and resource management to combat tyranny. Through intense negotiations, tactical warfare strategies, and unwavering perseverance, they orchestrated a coordinated global effort to dismantle the Axis powers’ grip on the world. Their collaboration ultimately led to the restoration of peace, stability, and justice, proving that even in the darkest of times, unity and resilience can overcome oppression. This crisis not only tested their ability to think critically under pressure but also provided a deeper understanding of the complexities of wartime diplomacy and global leadership

Harry Potter: Wizards Assemble! Uniting Against the Dark Mark Crisis Committee Summary:

The Harry Potter: Wizards Assemble! Uniting Against the Dark Mark Crisis committee, chaired by Grady L. ’24, Kyle F. ’25, and Zoe M. ’26, addressed the escalating threats posed by Voldemort and his followers. Delegates from across the wizarding world gathered to discuss strategies for defending Hogwarts and the wider magical community. Central to the discussions were plans to weaken Voldemort through the destruction of his Horcruxes and the use of powerful magical creatures, including dragons, in battle. Additionally, delegates emphasized the importance of magical education, particularly in broom flying, to form an organized aerial defense against dark forces. As the Death Eaters were believed to be infiltrating Hogwarts, efforts to track their movements and uncover their motives became a top priority. Enchanted cameras and the ghosts of Hogwarts were proposed as key tools for monitoring and reporting suspicious activities. Throughout the conference, several urgent crises emerged, including sightings of dragons, the presence of a Kraken in Hogwarts Lake, and the discovery of a secret gambling club possibly linked to dark magic. In response, the conference passed a series of directives, including initiatives to better utilize brooms, deploy enchanted surveillance, and leverage Hogwarts’ ghosts as spies. Despite challenges with funding and logistical coordination, the conference ended with a renewed sense of unity and resolve, as delegates committed to working together to face the rising darkness and ensure the safety of the wizarding world.
