Over the winter break, Politics and Government student Myra S. had an incredible opportunity to participate in the YMCA’s Youth in Government mock legislature assembly at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee. Serving as Representative S., Myra was sworn in on Wednesday at the Capitol Church before beginning her work in the House.
Myra presented her bill, HB 1077 on End-of-Life Options, successfully reviving it from Representative Daryl Campbell’s office to bring it back to the House floor for discussion and a potential vote. Throughout the week, she actively engaged in debates, earning recognition from her peers for her poise and determination—an impressive feat for a first-year participant.
On Friday, when her bill was brought forward, the debate centered heavily on the Appropriations and Funding section, with multiple sitting legislators spot-checking the details. In the final vote, it came down to a razor-thin margin. After a division was called, her bill narrowly failed with a 28-27 vote.
Despite the outcome, Myra’s performance was outstanding. Passing her first committee and holding her ground in debate were remarkable achievements. We are incredibly proud of her efforts and the grace she demonstrated throughout the process. If you see her, please join us in congratulating her on this impressive accomplishment!
