Canterbury students had an exciting opportunity to chat with Iditarod champion Ryan Redington over Zoom, diving into the thrilling world of sled dog racing! Redington, a third-generation musher and the grandson of Iditarod founder Joe Redington Sr., shared fascinating insights about his recent race, the dedication it takes to compete, and the incredible endurance of his sled dogs, who consume and burn an astonishing amount of calories each day to power through the grueling Alaskan terrain.
During the call, Redington introduced us to his oldest dog, Sky, and answered a variety of student questions about life on the trail, from how he trains his team to what it feels like to cross the finish line. He also shared stories about his most memorable winnings, including a massive 110-pound bronze statue of his grandfather, golden nuggets, and a special champion’s blanket—each carrying deep personal and historical significance.
The conversation was both engaging and inspiring, giving students a rare behind-the-scenes look at the legendary race and the mushers who dedicate their lives to the sport. It was an unforgettable experience, and we are so grateful for the chance to learn from a true champion!
